Preventing suicide is still a great public-health challenge. In the world, suicide is the 20 most common causes of death for people of all age group. Every year, nearly 800 000 people take their own lives, or "a death every 40 seconds or about 3,000 every day".
Each suicide is a tragedy that affects his/her families, communities and entire countries and has long-lasting effects on the survivors. After a suicide, approximately 135 persons will suffer from bereavement.
September 10, 2018, marks the 16th World Suicide Prevention Day.
The theme of this year is “Working together to prevent suicide”.
